People in New York city drive carelessly and fast. They don’t pay attention to speed limit signs. Sometimes they cause car accidents and deaths. Many people were killed in car accidents last year. The family members of the victims (someone who something bad happens to them) asked the city to change the speed limits. They said ” We want streets where our children can run and play without fear that they will be run over (to hit someone with a vehicle and drive over them) by automobiles.” Today, a new speed limit of 25 mph (40 kph) takes affect (starts) for most New York City streets. The old limit was 30 mph (48 kph). The new speed limit applies to about 90% of the streets—essentially (basically) all roads where there are no speed-limit signs.
There are many goals behind this decision; The city’s mayor said that he wanted to improve traffic safety and end pedestrian (people who travel on foot) deaths. He said that many people in New York agreed that drivers must drive more safely to protect children and seniors (people who are old; elderly people).” The Department of Transportation, for example, wants to reduce traffic accidents and deaths by making people drive more carefully. The WHO estimated (calculated; counted) that 1.2 million people were killed and 50 million injured on the roads around the world in 2004. This number could fall if people drove slowly.
